Lewisham Local History and Archives hold the borough art collection as part of the Archives. The list of art heritage assets comprises over 600 items. These include oil paintings, watercolours, acrylics, prints, works in a variety of mediums including pencil, chalk, pen and ink and framed photographs.
Most works were acquired through archival deposit to Lewisham Council and the predecessor authorities of Deptford and Lewisham Municipal Councils and the Vestry bodies. Some were bought for the collection from local artists or because they portrayed local scenes. All have a local connection and were acquired for heritage not artistic reasons.
None of the items are currently on display, but we are digitising them and making these available on the web. 162 oil and acrylic paintings have been digitised and catalogued as part of the Public Catalogue Foundation project and are available on the Your Paintings website
We have a collection of images on Picasa at Lewisham Heritage which include photographs and art works exploring the history of the borough.
